Day 17

We thought we had a long walk yesterday… In fact, it was much more longer today.

We start slowly walking on the little streets around our apartment.  The go we went for the 199 steps to the Abbey.  It goes together quite well, with rest stops along the way. The steps were originally made of wood. It was only in 1774 that they were replaced with stones from Sneaton.

It is believed that the 199 steps served as a test of Christian faith for those wishing to pray at St. Mary's Church. Climbing these steps was a demonstration of faithfulness. Once up there, we had a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the port and town of Whitby. We visited the area around the Church of St. Mary and its cemetery, and we visited the famous Abbey, of which only ruins remain, since it was completely destroyed during the First World War.

We walked to the very top to enjoy the extraordinary view. We passed by the brewery, but it was too early to taste the beer and have lunch. We came back by another way sloping with a smaller section in steps.

We had lunch at the Cornish Pastry and even had a dessert of Ice cream after.

As the weather is so beautiful, we went for a boat ride before coming back home for a rest in the late afternoon.

And since we hadn't walked enough yet, we walked to the end of one of the quays.  We like to walk, as you probably guessed.

Tonight we went at trenchers for a marvelous fish and chips. We accompanied the meal with a really good salad, made up of fruits and vegetables. We came back home early. Our legs couldn't take it any more.
